THE LOWDOWN

——————-

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will be packing his bag, slotting his passport into his pocket and boarding a plane today as he heads to Japan. Lucky him!

But he’s not off on a holiday, off to sample the sushi delights of Tokyo or heading to the Japanese ski fields. He’s going on an official state visit – to meet with Japan’s new Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga.

Meeting with other world leaders is an important part of a Prime Minister’s job – because it’s important for us to have as many friends as possible out there in the world. Just like in the playground, really.

The two leaders are expected to talk about tackling the COVID pandemic and increasing trade between our countries – which is to say, increasing the number and range of things we buy from each other and sell to each other.

An effort that got a big boost yesterday with news Australia has signed a trade agreement with 14 other countries in the Asia Pacific region that is the biggest deal the world has ever seen.

SPIN THE GLOBE

————————-

Each day, we give the world globe a spin and find a news story from wherever it stops … and today, we’ve landed in Egypt … where archaeologists are celebrating the discovery of almost 100 coffins – many with mummies inside them.

It’s estimated the mummies are about 2,500 years old … and they’re in excellent condition. Because Ancient Egyptians were so good at embalming human bodies – which involved wrapping them in cloth and drying out the flesh – many of the skeletons are remarkably intact – giving scientists an amazing insight into what life was like 2,500 years ago.

The mummies are all inside their own sarcophagus – which is the name given to the stone or wooden box that contains them – often decorated with elaborate designs.

The mummies will now all be moved to a big museum near Egypt’s famous pyramids of Giza.

There’s a link to a cool video in today’s episode notes showing the discovery.

SPORTS TIME

———

It was the weekend of the underdog in the sporting world over the weekend – with two stunning upsets in the arenas of rugby and cricket.

New Zealand’s all-conquering All Blacks were left stunned after Argentina’s Pumas beat them for the first time in 35 years – smashing the All Blacks in Sydney by 25 points to 15.

Puma’s fly-half Nicolás Sánchez scored all 25 of Argentina’s points with a try, six penalties and a conversion. And while all of that was remarkable: it was a victory also for determination and persistence for the Argentines.

Travelling to Australia from South America, the whole team had to be in quarantine for several weeks before the game – training in their hotel and working out in their bedrooms. There’s a cool link in today’s episode notes to a video explaining the efforts they all went to.

In other sporting underdog news .. the Hobart Hurricanes surprised everyone over the weekend defeating the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League. The Tasmanians won with 11 balls to spare – much to their delight – with leg spinner Amy Smith having an especially good game – taking two wickets. Oh – did we mention she’s only 15 years-old?

POP CULTURE CORNER

—–

Pop icon Harry Styles made a little bit of history over the weekend, becoming the first male to appear solo on the cover of American fashion magazine, US Vogue.

Being on the cover of Vogue is considered a big deal in fashion circles. And Harry being Harry – he’s gone and done it in signature style. Known for wearing clothes that some people might consider are made for women, Harry is photographed for the cover wearing a dress.

In an interview accompanying the photo shoot, Harry said: If I see a nice shirt and get told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay?’ Doesn’t make me want to wear it less though… I think the moment you feel more comfortable with yourself, it all becomes a lot easier.”
